How TAOBOY Handles BaZi in the Southern Hemisphere

A source-aware explanation of the Southern Hemisphere year and month adjustments currently implemented by TAOBOY, including the distinction between the originating principle and the software boundary.

Where the year-pillar principle comes from

The principle of resetting the annual Tai Sui at the beginning of spring in the Southern Hemisphere was proposed by Liunian Shi (流年氏). His original Chinese article, published through the WeChat account “流年流月流日” on 26 May 2025, argued that a seasonal starting point developed in the Northern Hemisphere should be reconsidered when it is applied south of the equator.

A public repost appeared on the QuanBuFang blog on 27 May 2025. This TAOBOY article is an edited explanation, not the original work. Bright organised and extended the rule set for a complete chart; TAOBOY translated those rules into deterministic software and tests.

Theory and software boundary are different statements

Liunian Shi's theoretical contribution is the seasonal principle: use the Southern Hemisphere's start of spring to change the annual Tai Sui. Seen through the Northern Hemisphere solar-term sequence, that seasonal point corresponds to Li Qiu.

For consistent results across countries, time zones and clients, TAOBOY uses the exact Li Qiu instant in Beijing time as the unified software boundary for the Southern Hemisphere year pillar and zodiac. The public source describes the seasonal principle as occurring around 7 August; it does not establish the engineering detail that TAOBOY later chose. The boundary is therefore not a fixed midnight on 7 August, a birthplace-local midnight or a device-local date.

The complete rule currently implemented by TAOBOY

The year rule alone does not produce a complete Four Pillars chart. TAOBOY applies the following explicit set of rules so that the year, month, day and hour are treated consistently.

  • The Southern Hemisphere year pillar and zodiac change at the exact Beijing-time Li Qiu instant.
  • The Southern Hemisphere month branch is moved six branches to the opposing branch from the Northern Hemisphere seasonal month branch.
  • The month stem is not shifted mechanically. It is recalculated from the adjusted year stem and month branch using the Five Tigers method.
  • The day pillar follows the same day-cycle system in both hemispheres.
  • The hour pillar follows the same hour-branch system in both hemispheres.
  • True solar time is used to decide the birth day/hour context in charting; it does not move the already fixed Beijing-time Li Qiu year boundary.
  • All boundary decisions use an exact instant, not an approximate calendar date.

What the method does—and does not—claim

Different BaZi schools understand the relationship between the Ganzhi calendar and local seasons differently. Some retain one Northern Hemisphere calendar globally. TAOBOY publishes its current rule so readers can compare charts produced under different assumptions; the existence of disagreement is part of the research context.

Celebrity birth records can conflict, some public figures have no reliable birth hour, and interpretation varies between schools. Such cases may illustrate a line of reasoning or suggest questions for study, but they cannot by themselves establish the method or dismiss competing approaches. TAOBOY does not calculate a success rate from celebrity narratives.
